The Cavern Has Teeth
With not a lot of light in the underground world of Carlsbad Caverns State Park, I was tempted to play around with slow shutter speeds and various movement. Add in Continue Reading →

Green Herons have such beautiful coloration in my book. Just look at those wings! Beautiful and highly functional as well.
I’m not sure what is so pied-billed about this grebe, but they are easy to identify!
Not sure why these birds are just called ‘yellowthroat’ when their whole body seems to be yellow!
Who knows how long this column has been slowly, drip by drip, building its way to the ceiling. Taken inside Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
The White Sands of White Sands National Park attract a lot of photographers.
More from White Sands National Park.
If you want to get to the top of the Gateway Arch (see view here), then you’ll have to step into the pod. This is the mechanism that brings you Continue Reading →
Being in Saint Louis for work and to visit friends, I also checked off another ‘new to me’ National Park, Gateway Arch. The view from 630′ high in the sky Continue Reading →
Sometimes I prefer my titles to be exacting. In this case, I truly can’t confirm the Mallard is really watching the Snowy Egret take off. But it is in the Continue Reading →
No National Park has been on my list for as long as Carlsbad Caverns. And it lives up to the hype of a really cool underworld. At one point you Continue Reading →
I’ll have some nesting pictures later in the week because these Brandt’s Cormorants in La Jolla, California nest RIGHT next to a sidewalk on a bluff. But for now, enjoy Continue Reading →
Wandering around Missouri’s backroads, finding odd stuff.
I guess I never looked too closely at the Great Egret photos I’ve taken or maybe the West Coast egrets aren’t so green around the eyes. This Great Egret, stalking Continue Reading →
At the Gateway Arch National Park this week I had a little fun with the phone’s panorama mode. Not an easy task to bend over backwards but an interesting image Continue Reading →

Trash interests me. I’m odd that way. A drone’s eye view of the Calabasas Landfill shows their technique of laying down a bunch of strips of plastic and then just Continue Reading →
A Mallard pair keeps a vigilant eye out for predators.
The LA Central Library has a LOT to explore. Not just books, but a lot of art as well, including the ceilings.
Someone else eventually showed up, but for a while, I had a whole movie theater to myself. It was glorious.
Coming up with titles is sometimes hard. My brain’s not awake right now. Sorry. From the lovely fields north of Santa Barbara toward Solvang in California.
Art, straight from The Last Bookstore in LA. Dolls, for me, never cease to have a certain creep factor.
I don’t know if White Sands National Park is in a desert, per se. As it is, the sands are gypsum, not typical sand you think of in the Gobi Continue Reading →
Throwback to a road trip in 2022 through the Western US.
No, not the wizard, but the bird! Of course it is a bird. ð This little chirp has, in my book, super-sized talons. We just had a sprinkle of rain Continue Reading →
More from San Fernando, before the shops opened.
Back in March we took a special trip up to Alaska with hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. I also miss winter (see: wildfires in LA in January). Having once Continue Reading →
Back to White Sands National Park. It’s full of what seem like perfectly untracked dunes, riffled by the wind. Until you get closer and notice the tiny, itty bitty tracks Continue Reading →
I’m sure there is a story around Black-crowned Night Heron are called Night Herons. I’ve only ever seen one at night but the rest are plentiful during the day. A Continue Reading →
Not sure why I like this one. It’s obviously off kilter, partially out of focus. No rules followed. It might be crap, or maybe you like it too.
