Yesterday was a transition day out at the Malibu Lagoon.
When I got there drizzle coated my camera and had left the parking lot and beach deserted.
Except the couple hundred birds I had come to observe. Most of them didn’t care, it seemed, as they squawked and shoveled through the muck of low tide looking for food.
The lagoon is an interesting slice of coast where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean and, behind a natural breakwater, makes a haven for dozens of species of birds.
Out on the breakwater, really just more sandy beach to the casual observer, the waves were lax and the wind fair. Brown pelicans bobbed on the slight surf.
The sun started breaking through while I hunted (with my camera) for something new rather than all the familiar gulls and whimbrels.
