Title: Durbar Square Wall Details
Location: Bhaktapur, Nepal, Asia (27°40’20” N 85°25’40” E)
Description: Known commonly as Bhaktapur Durbar Square, to differentiate it from the other two Durbar Square’s in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which enjoy UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, this small maze of buildings and open spaces contains a rich architectural heritage.
While there are ornate figures and statues throughout the rambling complex, often carved into the sides of building posts(which I will be sure to show in later posts), it was the simplicity of this view, just past the main entrance, that caught my eye.
Certainly the scroll work is ornate as well as the serpents and the small Buddha at the top of the window. What I enjoy about this view, though, is the juxtaposition of the circles of the window and frame to the straight lines of the brick. And then again the change in the brick patterns as is curves around over a now closed doorway.
This juxtaposition can be seen in the previous Photo Of The Day, Blossoms and Plowed Field. These types of repeating and semi-random patterns intrigue me when I travel or even around my hometown. It’s a different way to show the character of a space.
