Description: The Painted Hills of Oregon’s John Day Fossil Beds National Monument was on my list for a ages and then a couple years ago it resurfaced when friend and Pacific Northwest Photographer Emily Wenzel tweeted a few photos.
At the time she was based in Spokane. I have to admit, for all those years I never actually knew where the hills were located, precisely.
North Central Oregon is the answer. About 5-6 hours from Seattle.
If you have the chance know that the hills aren’t some large display like Death Valley or some such. There are a few choice hills that have eroded in the right manner as to show the delightful colors below the surface.
But the trip through the hills is certainly worth it when combined with further Oregon exploring.
