How To Help Your Local (Or Any) Public Broadcasting Service

You’re probably aware of the monumental decrease in funding the federal government has enacted with the latest budget cuts. If you don’t care about public broadcasting, here’s a picture of Yosemite.

If you’re looking to do something to help, there is a great resource called Adopt A Station.

Basically it is a website that shows how much all of the budgets of all the PBS stations have been cut. And then it gives a link to make a direct donation.

For instance, when I search for California, there are a lot of stations (big state) and most range from 4% loss to 20% loss. If you live in California, you can find your local station here.

But some have lost more than 40%, mainly in rural areas like Chico and Redding and Eureka.

Further, there is a section near the bottom of the page showing a semi-random station that has lost a large portion of its funding, somewhere in the US. I used this function to find three stations with what I considered large cuts and then went directly to their donation pages to donate.

Unfortunately this page isn’t a realtime update, so it’s not like your donation will be reflected on the main page as directly decreasing the budgetary shortfall.

That aside, the page is a good way to see what areas needs help and then allows you to directly help.
