Elephants On The Serengeti

I’ve been staring at this screen, writing one thing then another. Deleting and retyping. Trying to capture what I felt when in the presence of mighty elephants in Africa.

How? How to tell you what it’s like feeling that stir inside me, unless you have felt it too. Have you been awestruck to the point of speechlessness by any natural event in your life? Then we are closer to understanding each other.

To know these animals are wild and roaming like deer in the USA , after only viewing them in zoos, boggles the mind. No one owns them. No one feeds them. You know that rabbit you saw cross the road the other day? Elephants on the Serengeti.

They don’t need humans. That’s another lesson that is clear on the savannah. Well, not entirely true. They need humans to not encroach on their land and not hunt them. They need humans to no interfere.  Otherwise, they do fine without us and maybe that is what is so amazing to me when watching them. This is life, larger than us, and doesn’t need our help except to get out of the way.

Enjoy these six photos from Tanzania. I know I will return to create more photos of these awe inspiring, gorgeous animals.

Have you had a similar experience with nature in your travels near and far? I’d love to hear about it.

These photos are stunning. I really love the one with the baby peeking out. I have seen wild elephants in Africa and spent time with them at a sanctuary in Thailand, and they are such amazing creatures — my favorite! My second favorite animals are orcas. Seeing them in the wild up here in Alaska is indescribable and makes me feel just like you felt around the elephants. (It has also made me swear off Sea World or anything similar.) Thank you for sharing these gorgeous shots!
