A Trio Of A Trio Of Leafs

Description: Take a look at this first photo of three brightly colored leafs, taken yesterday in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There’s something different about this Fall photo, can you figure out what it is?

The answer: It was shot on a phone, underwater.

You can see two of the leafs at the bottom of this near over/under image. Those types of shots, where you see both above and below the waterline, are easier to do with a bigger lens. While the lenses on the new iPhone 13 Pro are bigger, it’s hard to capture that specific look.

That being said, I was delighted to be able to shoot in this small stream in ways I could not do with my larger Canon R5. Besides the fact that it is not completely waterproof, it’s also too big to get close enough to these leafs and in the small stream.

Here’s a more abstract look.

Fall is not an often celebrated time of year in Southern California, because we just don’t have the distinct changes of seasons other locations enjoy. Trees do change color and we do have nice tones, but it’s more muted.
