Title: New Camera Experimentation
Location: Los Angeles, California, USA, North America
Description: A client requested some video be shot at 500 or 1000 frames per second in at least 1080p (HD) format so I started looking for a suitable camera and lens combination to fit the bill.
After a couple days of searching, I decided on the Sony RX-100 V as a great candidate for the slow-mo action without jumping to 4K quality (read: $75,000 or more for that type of setup).
Then gear lust kicked in and I started thinking about all the other things I can do with it. I plan to get a dive housing and take it under the waves on some future trips (want to join me to learn photography, above and below the surface, in Costa Rica and Panama or Alaska?).
So I bought it. And it’s been wonderful to play with and so different from the Canon lineup. I’ve taught people on the Sony platform before and I’m familiar with the layout, it’s just nice having so much power (4K video and 24 frame per second burst mode, for instance) in a little package.
The video work I will be doing is for Andy Suzuki and the Method, whom I had the pleasure of working with in the past when they needed an album cover photo. They wanted to burn stuff, I like burning stuff; it was a fun collaboration. You can see that image and hear their work here. I can’t tell you what we’re exactly going to do for the music video, but it will likely include more fire.
