Title: White Ibis In Panama
Description: It was a trip to Panama this last July that got me hooked on Birding (with a capital B). I was shooting the Safari Voyager for UnCruise Adventures during their Pure Panama itinerary. The assignment was to capture images of the ship and crew in action for advertising purposes and was a total of 8 days/7 nights onboard. Just before I left, I found out this particular sailing was an Ornithology Themed Cruise and there would be a Birding host onboard.
The trip was with Dr. Roger Lederer and his wife, two fun and knowledgable ornithologists who sparked a passion in me to learn more about our avian friends. The trip was attended by at least a dozen other birders so the energy and interest were contagious. I came back from that trip, downloaded a bunch of apps (of which, eBird, Merlin Bird ID, Sibley Birds and BirdsEye are excellent options) and started exploring my local scene.
Then I went to Costa Rica and Panama with UnCruise again, just this last Fall, to lead my own Photography Themed Cruises. On that trip I clocked in another 70 species. It was a bit heavenly. And I know there were a lot of birds I missed, being as new to the science as I am.
One of my favorites from the trip is this White Ibis. I love how the blue eye contrasts with the beak and legs as well as the elegant curve of the beak. We found this fine example in the middle of a channel between the Panamanian mainland and the largest island in Central America, a little spot know as Isla Afuera. You can find it on a map by clicking the link.
