Meet The Mugger Crocodile

Description: Unlike yesterday’s photo of the gharial crocodile, its Rapti River cousin, the mugger, is a bit more stout.

It has a larger range than the gharial, extending across the Indian subcontinent from Sri Lanka to Pakistan to Iran to Nepal and Bangladesh. It gets around!

They are dangerous to humans in freshwater lakes, rivers and marshes although they are not known to stalk our species. They do like livestock and other wild animals that get too close. According to Wikipedia: “The mugger crocodile preys on fish, snakes, turtles, birds and mammals including monkeys, squirrels, rodents, otters and dogs. It also scavenges on dead animals.” It has a wide diet!

Just look at those scales! Straight out of pre-historic times.
