The forecast for the day says “Highs In The 80s” as I grab my Polartech fleece jacket and wander down the hall of the Ohana Wikiki Beachcomber at 4:30am. My eyes are not fully open, even with the aid of a shower. How did I let the Nerd of Nerd’s Eye View talk me into this?

It’s the last day of my press trip to Hawaii and for once, nothing was on the docket. With a 1pm flight I had dreams of actually relaxing on the beach for once. I had seen beaches on this trip, but never had a solid two hours to just sit and people watch while grabbing as much Vitamin D as I could before heading back under the cloud cover of Seattle. But then Pam, The Nerd, mentioned the “…second largest open fish auction in the world and there are tons of fish and…” When Pam starts getting excited about something it is often infectious.

Because of her, I gave up my last morning, my last chance to sleep in, on the Islands to instead stand in a freezer for a couple of hours. I’ll admit, I was a bit excited. I was also concerned about which lens to use. I wouldn’t have a chance to switch while inside the cold or risk massive amounts of condensation inside the camera and lens. I also wasn’t sure if I’d hear the 4:30am wake up call. Packing two cameras the night before, I managed maybe three hours of sleep before my wake-up call.

What follows is a slideshow of our time at the auction thanks to Brooks Takenaka and the Honolulu Fish Auction. The photos are accompanied well with Pam’s great explanation of the auction workings. If you live on the West Coast of the USA, the tuna you eat most likely came through this auction. Notice the yellow fins of the yellowfin as well as the fogged up picture when we walked outside to the docks.

Costa Rica In Pictures

In 2006 I took a short trip to Costa Rica which was, admittedly, not photography focused. I know, it happens. Yes, a woman was involved. It happens.

Here are a few shots from that trip when we took excursions around the country. I will be returning to Costa Rica, solo, in June and plan on bringing back a fuller, though never complete, view of the country. Until then, enjoy!

Gray Yosemite

I made the opportunity this week to spend a couple of nights in Yosemite thanks to my wonderful friend Sheri. I had never been to the park before and only had a limited time to shoot. One day was pouring rain and one morning the sunset was, ehhhh. So if you ever wondered what the gorgeous park looks like when the weather is less than ideal, here you go.

African Safari’s Big 5

You go to Africa.

You drive a safari.

You take pictures.

Laws require you to post pictures of the Big 5. Not Big Five. Big 5.

Yes, laws. I’m not sure which, but they’re on the internet. Look up “Big 5 Laws”.

What are the Big 5? Stealing from Wikipedia, they are “the lion, the African elephant, the Cape Buffalo, the leopard and the rhinoceros.” Originally picked because they were tough to hunt, some, like the Cape Buffalo, seem kinda funny to have on the list. In reality, they are all fairly easy to find except the rhino in Tanzania. Our guide mentioned there were only seven black rhino in the Serengeti National Park and about 20 in Ngorongoro Crater (where we spotted ours, off at a distance). The others, meh, all over the place. In trees, in the grass. Ummm, just those two places. Trees and grass.

African Animals 2011 Calendar Now Available

Hey there! You probably know I take some photos and you may also know I went to Africa for the first time this year. So I put together a calendar which originally was aimed more for my own use (and my daughter’s) but then the crazy world of Lulu.com took over and, well, now you can purchase it too.

I’ve included 13 months (a bonus of December 2010 to help fill in holiday schedules early) and 13 different animals from Tanzania. All the classics are there in their own unique way. The calendar is only $20 + S&H. If you live local to the Seattle area I can meet you in the coming weeks and drop off a copy to save you S&H. Heck, I’ll even sign it for you.

Here’s a preview of the entire calendar, which I think makes it less of a preview. But anywho. Get crazy and go full screen with it to get the 3D effect!!

Come join in a fun filled evening listening to me yapper on about People, Places & Patterns as experienced on six continents of travel. The slides how won’t be your boring old stodgy ‘dude stands up in front and you fall asleep’ affair. Oh no, my friends, there will be tests!! And prizes if you pass the tests. While this won’t be the kind of audience participation that Rocky Horror elicits, it’ll be fun.

Travel from the heights and monasteries of Nepal to the jungles of Peru. Visits the blustery coast of Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day or the National Parks of Queensland, Australia in the dead of winter (hint; no snow!). See lions on the Serengeti plains lord over their fresh kill, the desolate patterns of red rock country in Utah and the crowded markets of Morocco. All of this (and more), and you never have to leave Leavenworth!!

Safe for all ages, I love kids’ questions the most so bring the whole family. Oh yeah, it’s free!
