Lovely Lady Liberty

A short entry tonight as we’re trying to get to sleep at a reasonable (just past midnight) hour.

Our family went out to Liberty Island to check out the Statue of Liberty. This was the first time we had been there, individually and as a family. It was something I really wanted to do and something we told Sabrina we were going to do it since we couldn’t the last time we visited. The weather cleared up part way and it was a great time.

The biggest bonus was not a lot of people getting the Memorial Pass from Statue Cruises when they got their boat tickets so they couldn’t go up in the pedestal. This left the museum inside and the pedestal itself quite deserted and open. I loved it. I love un-crowds. I’d highly suggest picking a bleak weekend in January to go. And as you can see from the photo at left, there was some blue skies before sunset.

Sabrina’s Day Report

Hello, this is Sabrina and my Daddy is doing the typing.

The day started when Daddy didn’t get up. And when Daddy kept snoozing I got up earlier than Daddy and Mama. And I was playing with Catalina. And I went to the Museum of Natural History with my Dada.

First we didn’t exactly go on the bus. I was dancing to the song of the Best Things Happen While You Are Dancing from my school play, even though you might not know that because you weren’t at my school play. So now we have been off the bus and we are waiting for the subway, the C train (well, it could be A or C). It was cool taking the subway. I had a lot of fun.

Then we went to try to find the Mythic Creatures and then we noticed they were out of tickets so we went to the dinosaur hall. I saw a lot of dinosaurs and I saw different types of T-Rexes. I saw one of the small ones that are related to the T-Rex was face down tearing meat out of this skeleton that it killed. The Apatosuarus it was eating it was eating the meat out from the bones, I know you might think this is gross, Lily.

I really enjoyed it. I loved the South America stuff.

A Day At The Museum

As you can see from Sabrina’s post above…..I slept in. A lot. It felt good though, the bed was very comfy.

We took the bus into New York and then the C train up to the American Museum of Natural History. it’s real nice to be able to get off the subway and walk right into the ticket line for the museum. Sabrina and I had our sites set on the Mythic Creatures exhibit which closes tomorrow but it was all sold out. Not to have our spirits dampened, we moved on to the dinosaurs which Sabrina loves.

We then worked our way to the Africa exhibit which I liked a lot and thought was quite well done. Then more meandering; Asia, Mexico and Central America, more Africa, South America…..by then we were running out of time with the PA system calling for closing time. We left in a great mood as we knew we weren’t going to see everything, but caught the things we really wanted to and enjoyed our time together, never getting on each other’s nerves.

We tried to catch the subway back to the Port Authority before 6:15 but missed our bus by 2 minutes. So we decided to grab some food at a local pizza joint (and Sabrina got a good introduction in the more colorful ways to use the English language to voice your disgust at another person from a patron there) and then headed to Time Square for some entertainment. Sabrina wondered why they had twinkling lights when they already had so many bright lights. We took a mock picture in front of McDonalds to try to convince Kim that is where we ate, but it didn’t work, she was too smart for us.

All in all, I had a great day hanging out with Sabrina and just exploring. She was always upbeat (thanks Kim for packing a fruit roll in her pocket!!) and eager to check everything out. We had a fun time bonding and just enjoying life.

Heading to NYC

Got another trip to NYC today through Wednesday of next week. I’ll be hanging out with Cari and Richard on the weekend but other than that it’ll be work, work, drink some beer, work.

Back in NYC

This is going to be a short trip and short entry, probably. I’m in New York again for work. Only three days this time, one of which was spent flying out.
I stayed at cari and Richard’s on Sunday and watched the Seachickens lose to Pittsburgh in the Superbowl. At least the crowd wasn’t depressed like it probably was in Seattle when the game was over. Everyone here wanted Pittsburgh to win.
The next morning RIchard drove me in to town and dropped me off at the ABC studios where he works. From there I took the 1 to 28th St. and walked a few blocks to out office at 450 Park Ave. South. Work went all and I learned a lot and got a better feel for what changes need to be made and what needs to stay the same.

After work I walked around and took pictures (see gallery) of the general area. There’s a lot of buildinga whs here. I then decided on a whim to go up in the Empire State Building as it was just dusk and I should be able to get some good shots of the city. They had the windward sides roped off which is where the good alpenglow was but I still got some good shots of the city lighting up. It was coooolllllddd up there.
After that I headed for some dinner at Artisanal which has a nice cheese selection (I tried the Fosterhase) and a large wine list. I finished off a nice Pinot from Oregon while enjoying the ‘duck grilled under a brick’ which had the most scrumptious glaze I’ve tasted in a while.

Now I’m back at my hotel, tired and it’s not even 9pm. Ok mybe JUST 9pm. Ithink I’ll read a little then get something of a good night’s sleep. More work tomorrow and then a flight home to see Kim and Sabrina. I can’t wait!!

We made a day trip into New York City today after sitting around most of the morning and afternoon.

Richard dropped us off on 67th and East Central Park around 4pm and we quickly found the statue of Balto the dog, which is something Sabrina really wanted to see. After that, and playing at a playground in Central Park for a bit, we walked south to the end of the park and then West on 59th.

After mistakenly taking the subway in the wrong direction, we managed to catch a cab down to Battery Park and catch a view of the Statue of Liberty at night from the shore. After that we headed over to the Statten Island Ferry terminal to use the bathroom, get some hot cocoa and catch the 1 subway north back to Time Square.

When the found Kim a scarf at a street vendor and on over to the Port Authority for the 167 bus back towards Cari and Richards.

It was a fun adventurous day and we learned a few good things about moving around in New York which should help on my next couple of trips to the city.
