Weekend Photography Challenge #11: BACKLIGHT – 31+ Days To Better Photography

After last weekend’s topic stumped some on how different metering methods could be used, I thought it best to give a specific example this weekend.

For this weekend’s challenge I again want you to concentrate on different metering modes and play around with them. And to help with that, I want you to pick a subject, any subject, that is backlit. The light should be coming from mostly behind your subject toward the camera. This will make it difficult to get proper metering in some modes, but not others.

Think of a setting sun behind someone (and you want to be able to see their face). A lightbulb behind a sign. A candle behind a soft, cuddly, gently cooing baby. Whatever you might have at hand. Or use an external flash.

Any way you slice it, play with the modes and see how the effect changes with backlight.
