It’s the weekend and time for another challenge. This one conceptually is easier but realistically, in a measuring kinda way, isn’t. That’s because with this weekend challenge, which ends whenever I go to bed on Monday, has only two items to concentrate on, but you don’t get to make a choice. I’m mean that way today.
The two topics you need to focus (it never gets old for me) on are:
- Shapes – any shape, but make it something that is distinct
- Histogram
You don’t have to show the histogram unless you want to post that as well. Instead, I want you to be aware of the histogram when shooting and take a look at it. What is it telling you? Can you improve your shot any by using it? Things like that.
Post up your photos from the weekend and I hope you get some sun out there!
I also want to remind you I have three workshops coming up this next month.
- Level 2 Workshop in Seattle on May 14th
- Level 1 Workshop in San Diego on May 21st
- Level 1 Workshop in LA on May 22nd
I know a couple of you out there are already signed up and I hope to see more of you on my travels!

The round rocks were cool shapes on the beach. I see on the histogram that there was some clipping on both sides. It was near sunset and the light was too bright. I need a filter.

Sorry, here are the rocks.
I like it and it wasn’t what I was expecting. Which beach is that? I want to say it’s in Australia for some reason.
Ona Beach about 10 miles south of Newport OR. You’ll have to drive down the coast. : )
Hola! Hopefully not too late to enter. My shape is “a circle,” but once you walk up to it, it’s clearly a much more interesting one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmontague/5680219908/in/photostream
I couldn’t quite capture the whole shape; it’s embedded in the sidewalk and I was holding the camera as high as I could! The histogram was well centered – it was an overcast day so there was quite a lot of room on the bright side.
Nice Josh. Gray days can make for some nice shooting situations as there isn’t as much contrast. Try that same shot again on a sunny day and see just how much the histogram is different.
