Photo Of The Day – Guest Photographer – Gary Arndt

rotate.php This week’s Guest Photographer is Gary Arndt.  Gary sold his house, locked up his possessions and hit the road nearly two years ago and has been traveling ever since.  With over 50 countries visited and hosting his own Photo of the Day feature, Gary posts almost daily about his travels.  I was drawn to Gary’s blog by his engaging writing style and down to earth manner of ’speaking’.  His posts are an easy read and usually strive to inform about his current slice of the world.

Gary’s website is called Everything-Everywhere.com.  He has subscription by RSS and Email or can be followed on Twitter as EverywhereTrip.  His blog has over 1000 subscribers, a testament to the value of his writing.

I asked Gary my standard four questions and here’s what he had to say:

1) Explain a bit about who you are and the type of photography that interests you most.

My name is Gary Arndt. I’m a former internet entrepreneur who set out to travel around the world back in March 2007. I knew nothing about photography prior to the start of my trip. I’ve been learning by trial and error over the last two years having taken close to 40,000 photos since my trip began.

2)  If you could have a paid trip for 4 weeks anywhere in the world just to photograph and report back, where would it be?

I’d go to Antarctica or the Namib desert in Africa. I think the best photos come from desolate places.

3) Name two of your photography inspirations.

It isn’t one person, but I have been reading National Geographic since I was six years old. I own one of the largest collections of National Geographic magazines and books in the world, including an original unbound copy of issue 1, volume 1 from 1888. I suppose like many people my inspiration came from all the thousands of photos in the pages of the magazine and books. My dream would be to have a photo in the pages of National Geographic some day.

4) What do you hope to convey to others through your photography?

As a traveling photographer, I just want people to experience what I experience. Unlike some photographers, I don’t set out to get great photos of a particular place, I just try to get the best photos I can wherever I am. That includes whatever the conditions are when I’m there, not the ones that just make for great photos (time of day, weather, etc).
