Mexico 2009 – Special Report: Attack Of Giant Moth Creature

IMG_0224-1 I was thinking it’d be a nice night to blog with the patio door open.  The waves are big, the cicadas and other night sounds have a wonderful tropical feel and for now the rains have stopped (Tropical Storm Andres coming this way, kinda).  But then “Giant Moth Creature” flew into our condo.  Bugs don’t normally, well, bug me, but this dude is huge for a moth.  See picture at left.  While getting close for the picture he took off, toward the inside of the condo as that’s where the light is.  After landing near the floor, frantically flapping its HUGE wings in disgust, I pondered what to do.  I have no protocol for a bug so huge.  My normal cup method didn’t seem like it would cover his wing span (close to a 747′s) but I decided to see what the kitchen had in store.

With a cup seemingly large enough and a copy of Vanity Fair (January, 2008….not mine, really) I approached his Hugeness, the King Moth of them all.  And then he took off again!!  EEEKKKKKkkkk!!  If my daughter wasn’t sleeping in the other room I’m sure I would have totally freaked out.  It was like being buzzed by a P-51 Mustang straight out of WWII.  I had to actually dodge the frantic beast as it went for the lights.  I quickly turned on the outside lights and turned off the inside lights to try to get him to the glass door.  It worked, but not completely.  He got to the open door (as other bugs saw the invitation to come on in) but then pulled an about-face, his beady eyes filled with a mix of anger and disgust.  At least I think that’s what I saw.  I’m not sure, I was too busy trying to shoo it outside with Katherine Heigl (“Hollywood’s Hottest Blond Let’s Down Her Guard”) on the cover.  Eventually I did make contact and what a WHACK! it was.  It felt like hitting a solid grounder past the shortstop with a chance to turn it into a double.  It felt like way more resistance than any moth should be allowed to give a beautiful Hollywood actress on the cover of a major magazine.  I felt bad for it. (the moth, not Katherine)

Until I saw it happily circling around the outside lights, while I quickly closed the door behind it.  Blogging with the door open and lights on to invite monstrous creatures looking to take over my condo for the rest of the week rent free????  Not on my shift, Buster!

(Please note: No animals were harmed in the making of this blog post.  Unless you count my weak psyche which is now forever on the look out, when the sun goes down, for Giant Moth Creature)
