Amazon Releasing Kindle2

First off as a means of full disclosure let me state I’m a member of the Amazon Affiliate program.  That’s why you see the banner ad on the left and links to Amazon in some posts.  I try not to lean on it too heavily and I do believe Amazon offers some great products that I think those who read this blog would be interested in.  Plus it helped pay for this blog’s hosting service for the first time last month.  I don’t like a lot of ads and don’t plan on using the extensively on this site.

But when I find cool products that fit either the travel or photography niche I will point them out, Amazon or no.

Which brings me to today’s post.  I like gadget and love when technology can make life a bit easier or more convenient.  While I have a small laptop, it’s still not ultra convenient for a quick read of a book or blog and I love to read.  And then Amazon brought out the Kindle many moons ago, along with competition from Sony and others.  It looked like a good idea but I wasn’t sold, which is an odd thing for me and first generation gadgets.  Usually I jump on the bandwagon.  But I held off.

Until now.  I don’t think I’ll resist the pull much longer with Amazon’s release of Kindle 2.  Without getting my hands on one yet (anyone have a model for review?) I love the list of features this new model sports:

  • Just over 1/3″ (1cm) thick.  Now that’s small!
  • Weighs 10.2 ounces
  • Battery life of two weeks
  • It can hold 1500 books (approximately 1.4GB available for storage)
  • Text-to-speech will read books, blogs, magazines to you.  Great for roadtrips!

It is also said to have improved readability and display features.  I can’t personally comment on that, but the size and portability alone look like great options.  I’ve also been impressed with how quickly Amazon has built of ther number of titles available for the Kindle.  Content is the key with this device and Amazon has pushed hard to bring in all kinds of titles, including almost all of the National Best Sellers from the New York Times, USAToday and Wall Street Journal.

For me, looking at this summer, I’m thinking I’d love to get my hands on a copy for trips with my daughter.  We have a trip planned to Mexico which will be more of a vacation, but I’d also like to hit the road for a week or more.  Sabrina is awesome on roadtrips and loves to read as much as I do (maybe more).  With a Kindle we’d be able to bring along a passel of books, more so than space in the truck would allow.  And with the 3G connection to grab more, adding reference material would be easy, such as a Frommer’s Guide Book or great travel narratives such as J. Marteen Troost’s Getting Stoned with Savages: A Trip Through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu.  With over 230,000 titles, I’m sure we can find great material for us both.

But that brings up an interesting point; will we be able to share the Kindle2 when it’s bedtime and we both have an itch to read?
