New Lithium Battery Restrictions on Planes

This item was sent to me from a friend wondering if we had problems at the airport with our batteries. I had to tell him I was a bit ignorant what he was talking about until he linked me to this site.

TSA has new rules about how much lithium content can be brought on board. If I get this right, you:

  • Can bring onboard any number of lithium ion batteries that are less than 8grams. This is mist cell phone and smaller camera batteries.
  • Cannot pack any spare lithium battery in checked luggage unless it in a device.
  • Can bring up to two spare lithium ion batteries the a total of less than 25g of lithium content. This is in addition to the spares that are less than 8g.
  • Must limit lithium metal batteries to less than two grams

So I went in search of some info on our batteries. It turns out, they are way low. CanonBlogger has a table showing what he believes to be the content of some popular Canon batteries, based on a formula. So it looks like we can bring the two batteries Kim normally has as spares plus the one in the camera. I have a two battery power grip which can be considered a ‘device’. So if I wanted to get craft, I’d put two in there separate from the camera, one in the camera and then my two spares. Or something. Then we have the little cameras. And the laptop, with it’s spare battery but that is ‘in device’ as it is attached.

It should be an interesting trip the next time we are loaded with all that gear. This time around, we just have the smaller items that I’m sure won’t get picked up. At least they didn’t in Seattle.
