Google SMS Text Answers

google_smGoogle. they do everything.  And now, they have a good replacement for 411-And-More which costs, well, a LOT more.  It’s over $1.50 each time I use 411 to get a phone number.  Granted, it’s cool the way 411 will also send you a text message with the info after you’ve made the call, so you don’t have to call them back.

But The Googles goes a step further and simplifies.  Just send a test message from your phone to 466453 (GOOGLE if you use a standard keypad) and in the body include any number of things, like "Weather 98012" or "movies" or "Flight AA 2111".  Even better, just put in your location and the name of the business.  In this case Kim was looking for the number of the Whidbey Children’s Theater.  I couldn’t remember the whole name so I put in "Langley, WA  Children’s theater" and seconds later got back the number for the right place….plus two others in a certain radius.  You don’t have to put in the state for each search, but I just wanted to make sure it would work.  You see, South Whidbey STINKS for directory lookup.  It’s something with Whidbey Telco not playing well with the others.  If I call 411 and ask for the same thing, they usually don’t have it.  And being adverse to talking to people sometimes, this is WAY better.

Give it a try.  Just type in a message to 466453.  Something like weather and your zipcode will do.  More info can be found here.
