Yesterday was a bit of a disorganized day for me. I knew Sabrina had a doctor’s appointment to check her hearing but I couldn’t remember exactly which office to go to. Further, I was going to miss the proper ferry and be a few minutes late and wanted to call. But I got things mixed up and tried getting the number for the wrong place from my Mom (who I was on the phone with in the ferry line). This led me on a longer wild goose chance through the Everett Medical Clinic (where Sabrina’s appointment most definitely was NOT). By now I had chewed up 10 minutes on my cell phone and I was already past my limit for the month. Grrrr….
Then I remember Google’s mobile SMS application. I still had plenty of text messages left in my plan for the month so I gave it a try. I put in the recipient’s address as 466453 (GOOGLE spelled out on a phone keypad). The body contained the name of the proper clinic and the city. 4 seconds later I got the address, which helped make sure I had the right location, and the phone. Ahhhh….saved! I clicked on the phone number and after paying for one more minute past my limit, all was better in the world.
For those of us that prefer a quick text to a phone call (we’re out there, and we’re goofy like that) and who don’t have an data plan on our phones, this service works very well. I’ve used it before to find a movie in town, specific food (send a message with Sushi and then the zip code of where you are) and even fuel. Take a look at the site to see the wide variety of info you can pull from Google. Flights, stocks, weather, glossary, directions, movies, translations, currency conversion, calculations (ok, most phones have a calculator, but still…..) and more!
And for those that still like to speak into a phone (goofballs), there is 1-800-GOOG-411 for just the directory information you’re looking for. And you can still have them send you a text message with the info. :)
