Bullards Beach State Park

8pm 11/26
We are in yurt in the spot A62. These yurts, as with most all of the
Oregon State Park yurts, is made by Pacific Yurts. It’s really nice and
is a good mix between tent camping and an RV. And since it’s raining
right now, I’m glad we didn’t go with the backpacking tent as I had
originally wanted. Only being $33 which included the $6 reservation
fee, it’s all of $17 more than jsut getting a campsite here. I’d highly
suggest renting one if you get a chance.

We left Redding around 9:15 this morning and the change of scenery was
nice. Mt. Shasta was visable until we got to the West of it. The
Castle Crags looked really inviting and I’d like to do some
hiking/climbing up there some time. We drove without issue and made it
to Phoenix, OR where we picked up 29 gallons of biodiesel at Rising
Phoenix Biodiesel, which was part of an organic nursery and home shop.
They had some floor samples which made us change our mind about what we
want to use in our new house, so it was a good stop.

From there, we headed up to Roseburg and then over to Bandon on Hwy
42. We got into camp around 3pm and after checking in, we headed to the
beach. It was getting dark, there were gray clouds rolling from sea and
big winter waves were churning on the flat beach. This made the place
pretty deserted. Kim and Sabrina made a doll house out of driftwood
while I took some photos and watched some huge waves crash against the
jetty.

After that we headed back to the warth of our yurt (it has a small
baseboard heater), eat dinner and then showed Sabrina how to play chess
(I won). She’s got most of the moves for most all the pieces down
except the knights. Right now she is going through some stories while I
type and Kim reads a cool book about the Redwoods in bed. The fog horn
on the coast can easily be heard from the campground and makes a nice
rythem to relax to and imagine you’re 100 miles from civilization. And
then a diesel 5th wheel goes rolling by and you remember where you are.
We are not sure what we are doing tomorrow; if we are just going to
drive north in the morning (it’s 250 miles) or play on the beach for a
while and then head up. As it is, our next yurt in New Haylam will be a
short stay and all too soon I’ll be back in Seattle at work. Because I
don’t have many places to upload from here, this report will probably be
posted when our journey is over. :-( But alas, it’s been a fun trip
and I’d do it all over again if I only had the vacation time. -pwc
